Convertible Top Care

The most common question I receive after completing a top install is what’s needed to maintain the convertible top, what cleaning products should be used, and whether a protectant needs to be applied.
When it comes to caring for your newly installed convertible top, you will not need to apply protectant anytime soon as the manufacturer does this for you when the top is made.
Several key factors will help maintain its appearance and longevity. Here’s a detailed guide to address common questions.

1. What do I need to take care of the convertible top?
Basic items include:
- A soft-bristle brush for removing dirt and debris.
- Micro fiber cloths to prevent scratches while cleaning.
- Lint Roller Useful for regularly removing dust, pollen, or tree droppings from both fabric and vinyl tops.
Additional Care:
- For plastic windows, use a non-abrasive plastic cleaner to prevent yellowing and scratches. Plexus Plastic Cleaner/Polish is my top choice, with 210 Plastic Cleaner/Polish as a close second.
- For glass windows, standard automotive glass cleaner works well.
2. What should I use to clean the convertible top?
For cloth or fabric tops:
- Using a lint roller to remove lint, hair and other debris particles works great.
- Rinse your convertible top with water, then apply the cleaner.
- Use a cleaner designed for cloth convertible tops. Spray it on evenly one section at a time, then gently scrub with a soft-bristle brush then rinse off.
For vinyl tops:
- Again use a cleaner specifically formulated for vinyl. Apply it using a soft cloth or sponge, then rinse it off with clean water.
- Avoid harsh house hold detergents as they can damage vinyl.
- For small dirty spots, especially on white vinyl tops, use a spray foam glass cleaner to wipe them clean.
Additional tips:
- Avoid applying or using cleaners on your convertible top in direct sunlight.
- Clean the top at least once a month to prevent dirt and grime buildup. Regular cleaning prevents mold, mildew, and staining.

3. Do I need to apply any type of protectant to the top?
For fabric tops:
- Use a fabric guard or water repellent. These products protect the material from moisture, dirt, and UV rays. A high-quality fabric protectant will prevent water from soaking into the material, allowing it to bead off.
For vinyl tops:
- Use a UV protectant specifically designed for vinyl. This helps prevent fading and cracking caused by prolonged sun exposure. Vinyl protectants also add a layer of water resistance and make the surface easier to clean.
Frequency of application
- Apply protectants every 6-8 weeks or as needed, especially if the vehicle is exposed to harsh weather conditions or stored outside. If the top begins to lose its water-repellency (water stops beading on the surface), it’s time to reapply.
Additional Tips:
- Always keep your convertible top closed when parked: Leaving it in one position for too long, whether up or down, can cause it to develop a memory — either preserving its shape or causing damage
- Avoid automatic car washes: These can damage the top, causing fraying, tearing, or weakening of seals.
- Hand wash your car but not your top: Use mild, pH-balanced cleaners to prevent degradation of the material.
Be mindful of folding the top:
Ensure your convertible top moves smoothly, and carefully fold and tuck any wrinkled or uneven areas to prevent pinch marks or creases.

Follow these steps, and your convertible top will stay in such good shape, it might start feeling a little smug about it—looking great and working perfectly for years to come!
